Mary L. Benton Memorial Scholarship

Mary L. Benton Memorial Scholarship

Mary Lou Benton was a member of the Cowley County Joint Board of Health who continually represented the Arkansas City, City Commission from her initial appointment in September 1989 until her unexpected passing in February 2023 (34 years). Mary was the longest continually serving member of the Joint Board of Health in organization history (77 years).

Mary was committed to her community and devoted a great deal of time in giving back others through her volunteerism and service.  She was active in her church and devoted to her family. She would see or learn of problems in the community and seek to find ways to “make things right,” Mary exemplified the best in service and would rarely miss meetings on the various boards and commissions on which she served.

In her honor and in hopes of continuing her legacy of service to the community the Cowley County Joint Board of Health has authorized the funding of two (2) annual scholarships of five-hundred dollars ($500) each to be awarded to deserving local (Cowley County) high school graduates that are seeking to further their education in the field of professional health care.

The deadline for application is on March 31, 2024, by 11:59 PM.
