Marriage Licenses/Weddings

Cowley County District Court is once again accepting applications for Marriage License's however; due to Covid 19, we are asking that anyone applying for a Marriage License in the County please do it electronically by filling out the form on the following website;

Simply fill out the form with your information (make sure to select the correct County at the top of the first page of the form).  The County you select will be the County that will be processing your marriage license. Please do NOT use AUTOFILL when filling out the application on the website. If you have any questions regarding the process please read the FAQ's on the Website.

Once the payment is processed the Court will be notified and after the three day waiting period you will receive an encrypted email from us with your Marriage License you may then get married at any time within the next 6 months.  If you do not have a way to print the license when we email it back to you please respond to the email you received and we will mail your License to you instead.  Once the ceremony is completed and your witnesses have signed (two witnesses over 18 years of age) either you or your officiant can mail the License back to the Court at PO Box 472, Winfield KS 67156 or PO Box 1152, Arkansas City KS 67005 so that the Clerks can enter your marriage into the States system.  Please give us a week to receive the license and enter it if you choose to mail the license to one of our locations, before contacting Vital Statistics at the below link to get a Certified copy of your Marriage License.  You may also choose to scan the license in and send it via encrypted email, if you use this method to return the license to us then please give us 24 to 48 hours to process the paperwork before contacting Vital Statistics.

This is a new system and to ensure there are no bugs and no one is missed please contact us at 620-221-5470 (Winfield) or 620-441-4520 (Arkansas City) if you do not receive an email from the court three days after applying for the Marriage License.  We thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this process!


If you do not have access to a computer or smart phone then you may obtain a marriage license at the District Court Clerks Office in Winfield or Arkansas City. To obtain a marriage license, you must file an application with the District Court Clerks Office and pay a fee of $85.50 in cash only. When you apply for the license, you must provide a photo I.D. for both the prospective bride and groom, however there is no requirement that both parties be present to apply for the license. There is a 3 day waiting period between the time that your apply for the marriage license and the time the license may be issued. If you wish to have a judge perform your wedding ceremony, you may obtain information concerning the judges availability and cost for performing the ceremony from District Court Clerks Office.
