Job Title: Mechanic 1

Salary range: Starting Salary $18.88/hr

Job Description:

Position Summary: Under supervision, performs a variety of duties associated with the maintenance major and minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on county equipment.  May operate medium and some heavy equipment incidental to the work.

Essential duties or responsibilities:

  • monitors condition of assigned equipment to assure care, service, lubrication and repairs;
  • services, maintains and makes major & minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on equipment such as checking and servicing fuel, oil and coolant levels, lubrication, tire pressure and changes, and general appearance;
  • maintains records on operation of work accomplished and equipment operated;
  • responds to after hour calls;
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Marginal duties and responsibilities:

  • Operates single and double axel trucks loaders and tractor trailers to construct, repair and maintain the County roads and to haul equipment to job site;
  • drives truck to haul sand, gravel, culverts, and asphalt mix for road repair or to remove dirt, trash, snow, and other materials for disposal;
  • operates truck with snowplow blade to plow snow and sand roads as needed
  • may operate heavier equipment such as a backhoe, asphalt distributor, loader or road grader and may do welding on an occasional basis or as assigned;
  • performs a variety of other duties related to road maintenance, such as patching roadways, installing, erecting or replacing roadway signs, cleaning and removing debris from culverts, backfilling road washes, and trimming and removing trees and brush;
  • sweeps bridges, rocks up wing walls, mixes and pours concrete;
  • maintains records on operation of work accomplished and equipment operated;
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Experience:  Experience in operation and maintenance of trucks and heavy equipment. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of employment or training being available.

Education:   High school diploma or equivalent is required with two years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of trucks and related automotive equipment.

Accountability:  Knowledge of and the skill to operate and maintain assigned vehicles in a safe manner.  Knowledge of road construction and maintenance, materials and methods, and State traffic laws.

Working Conditions:  Extreme weather conditions, handling of chemicals and toxic fumes are factors in this position. Must have the ability to perform heavy physical labor under a variety of weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:  Ability to perform moderate and some heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds. To stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, reach, grasp, push, pull and perform similar body movements.  Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate office equipment, including a computer, a vehicle and heavy equipment. Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two-way radio; ability to hear malfunction of equipment.  Ability to see and read instructions, manuals and characters on a computer screen; ability to see and detect unacceptable materials.
